Step 1: Step 1

To mute someone from a tweet you've seen, tap the "More" icon at the bottom of the tweet (the three small dots) and select "Mute."

Step 3: Muting a hashtag

It's not currently possible to mute a hashtag or keyword on Twitter.com or in the official apps, but some third party Twitter clients do offer this functionality.

Step 4: Unmuting

To check which accounts you've muted, and to un-mute people on the full-fat Twitter site head to your "Settings" page. You can access this by clicking on your thumbnail profile picture at the top right of your Twitter screen, then clicking on "Settings."

Here's how to mute people on Twitter so you can virtually gag those vociferous tweeters.

Muting on Twitter

On the Twitter site, and in the official iPhone and Android apps, you can mute other Twitter accounts. This means you won't see any tweets from that account in your timeline. You also won't get push or text notifications from muted accounts.

The person you mute won't know you've shut them up and you're in no way blocking or unfollowing them -- simply turning the volume down.

How to mute on Twitter's official mobile apps

iPhone users can mute a user from one of their tweets by tapping on the drop-down arrow at the top right of the Tweet.

You can also mute from profiles on mobile by clicking the cog-shaped icon and selecting "Mute @username."

Android users should look for the three vertical dots (known as the "Overflow" icon) to see mute options from either Tweets or profiles.

Muting a hashtag

It's not currently possible to mute a hashtag or keyword on Twitter.com or in the official apps, but some third party Twitter clients do offer this functionality.

TweetDeck has a "mute" option for keywords in its Settings menu, Tweetbot for Mac and iOS also offers the same feature, while Twitterrific offers "muffling" functionality. Android users can mute keywords and hashtags using the Plume app.

Unmuting

To check which accounts you've muted, and to un-mute people on the full-fat Twitter site head to your "Settings" page. You can access this by clicking on your thumbnail profile picture at the top right of your Twitter screen, then clicking on "Settings."

Once you're in Settings, look down the left-hand side of the page to the "Muted accounts" section, click this to load up all and any accounts you've shut up.

To un-mute, simply click on the red mute sign to the right of the account's username.

To see a list of muted accounts on mobile, head to the "Privacy and Safety" section of your app's "Settings" menu on iOS or the "Privacy and content" section on Android.
