It's the question that's derailed many a family gathering: "What should we watch?Watch The Silencing Online"

You want something that'll make everyone happy, that'll avoid graphic violence or sex, that (ideally) you haven't seen a hundred times already. But doing the research takes time, and you need to put something on before your sister and your uncle start arguing about politics again.

That's where we come in. We've combed through the recent(ish) releases across the various streaming sites and come back with seven films to stream with the family.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Before Taika Waititi made Thor: Ragnarok, he helmed this hilarious, heartfelt adventure about two rejects – an unwanted orphan boy and his reluctant uncle – forging an unlikely bond in the New Zealand bush.

Running time:101 minutes.

Good for:Basically everyone – it's sophisticated enough for grown-ups but simple enough for kids.

Appropriate for:Most kids. Wilderpeopleis rated PG-13, and there is a (non-graphic) animal death that may upset very young or sensitive viewers.

Available on:Hulu, iTunes, Amazon, Google Play.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)

Think Noah Baumbach does The Royal Tenenbaums: The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)deals with the three adult children (Ben Stiller, Elizabeth Marvel, and an extremely good Adam Sandler) of a prickly patriarch (Dustin Hoffman).

Running time:112 minutes.

Good for:Slightly dysfunctional families who get emotional watching other dysfunctional families onscreen.

Appropriate for:Adults. Language and sexual content make Meyerowitzinappropriate for most children – not that most children would even wantto watch a movie about bummed-out grown-ups.

Available on:Netflix.

Kedi

This gentle documentary winds through the streets of Istanbul to meet the thousands of stray cats that roam there, and the human citizens who look out for them. Basically, it's a feature-length cat video.

Running time:79 minutes.

Good for:Families who worship their pets.

Appropriate for:Literally anyone who likes cats.

Available on:iTunes, Amazon, Google Play.

Home Again

Yes, the premise of Home Again– Reese Witherspoon is a single mom who hooks up with a younger man, and then immediately invites him and his friends to come live with her – is mildly insane. But if you're willing to throw "realism" out the window, you'll find a film that's sweet, funny, and almost aggressively pleasant. In other words, perfect holiday viewing material.

Running time:97 minutes.

Good for:Families who don't appreciate Mom enough.

Appropriate for:Teens and up, probably. Home Againis a pretty tame PG-13, with no explicit violence or sexuality. But the plot does revolve around a one-night stand.

Available on:iTunes, Amazon, Google Play.

Monster Trucks

Don't let the goofy concept and pitiful box office discourage you – Monster Trucksis a totally solid family film that feels like a throwback to the earnest kiddie adventures of the 1990s, with a sweet eco-friendly message to boot.

Running time:105 minutes.

Good for:Families with small kids.

Appropriate for:Just about anyone.

Available on:iTunes, Amazon, Google Play.

Mike Birbiglia: Thank God for Jokes

Standup might be a tricky bet for large groups, but it can pay off if you find a comic who suits your family's sensibilities. Thank God for Jokesis a little edgier than Mike Birbiglia's usual fare, but he continues to be a warm, approachable presence.

Running time:61 minutes.

Good for:Families who share a certain sense of humor.

Appropriate for:Adults and maybe older teens, but you may want to pre-screen this one first – it includes bad words, sexual references, and discussion of Birbiglia's (progressive) politics.

Available on:Netflix.

Batman & Bill

For those who can't get enough superheroes but have seen all of this year's offerings already, Batman & Billoffers a slightly different angle. The documentary tells the true story of Bill Finger, the forgotten co-creator of the Caped Crusader.

Running time:93 minutes.

Good for:Families with a nerdy streak.

Appropriate for:Most people, including most kids, although the younger ones might get squirmy.

Available on:Hulu.
